DUI arrest nearly cost Washington college athlete his pro career

Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been on the fast track to a professional football career ever since he began turning heads as a player for the University of Washington. The gifted athlete acknowledges that his life’s trajectory could have been permanently altered when he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol earlier this year.

Police responded to a minor car crash in Seattle. When they arrived at the scene, they found that Seferian-Jenkins had crashed into a tree and his vehicle came to rest in a park. Officers believed that the athlete was intoxicated, so they requested a warrant to draw a blood sample at the hospital.

Reports indicate that the intoxication tests came back to show that the football star was over the legal blood-alcohol limit. In response to the DUI charges, Seferian-Jenkins pled guilty and was sentenced to one year behind bars. Having served one night in jail, 364 days of the jail sentence were suspended by the judge.

Oftentimes, people make a mistake and get behind the wheel of their vehicle after having one or two too many drinks. Because this situation can happen so easily, people who are generally responsible can wind up facing serious consequences. Seferian-Jenkins found himself in this situation. He knows that the incident stemmed from a mistake, and he could have put his professional football career in jeopardy.

No matter the circumstances behind a DUI arrest, it can still be helpful to seek legal advice. Without being fully advised of all available legal options, a person might not be treated fairly when looking to resolve criminal charges.
