As Washington residents try to enjoy the final weeks of summer weather, many people may be partaking in in social events with family and friends — particularly during Labor Day weekend. Of course, many gatherings may include alcholic beverages. A day filled with fun outdoor activities can take a quick, serious turn if a person is charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to reports from law enforcement officials, there will be increased DUI patrols throughout much of western Washington. Police in Kitsap County are currently out in larger number and will be until Sept. 2. This is part of a yearly campaign to issue more drunk driving charges. During the effort last year, a total of 71 people were arrested on DUI charges in Kitsap County.
One local police official has gone through additional training to better identify drunk drivers. Even though police are usually aware of the proper procedures for arresting individuals, mistakes can still be made in the haste to make an arrest. When these errors are made, individuals are at risk of having their civil rights violated. This is why any evidence that isn’t properly gathered is likely to be dismissed from court, which can cause charges to be reduced or dropped.
Being charged for drunk driving is nothing to take lightly. In addition to fines, a person’s driving privileges can be temporarily taken away, which can cause significant hardship. Beyond that, depending on a person’s professional field, a DUI charge can prove to be incredibly damaging to a person’s current or future career opportunities.
