The state of Washington has some of the strictest gun control laws in the United States. While you may or may not have heard of this, a question that often arises is whether individuals need a license to own a gun and whether they can carry it with them anywhere.
While the state does not require you to get a gun license, qualifying individuals may carry certain types of guns. If you carry a loaded pistol on your person or have it with you while driving, you must have a Concealed Pistol License (CPL).
In addition, you must carry the weapon on your person and cannot leave the loaded weapon in an unlocked car or anywhere visible to anyone outside the vehicle. Even if you have a CPL, there are places where you may not bring your gun with you.
What to do if you are pulled over
If law enforcement stops you while driving, whether due to speeding or any other reason, they will most likely ask you for documentation. It is wise to let the officer know that you have a weapon inside the vehicle.
What happens next?
If you are carrying the gun lawfully, you may not get into trouble. However, not all firearms are allowed in Washington State, and not everyone qualifies for a Concealed Pistol License. What happens next largely depends on the circumstances of your particular case.
Professional help
If you find yourself in this or a similar situation, it is imperative that you know your rights. You have the right to remain silent and ask to speak with an attorney. Sometimes, law enforcement will ask questions even though you have the right not to answer them. Do not speak without your attorney present.
