After serious Washington crash, driver may face DUI charges

| Jul 8, 2014 | Drunk Driving

If one is accused of drinking and driving, there are often serious consequences that follow a criminal conviction. They could include fines, prison and other penalties. One man who was seriously hurt in a car accident may also face DUI charges. Washington State police have indicated that they intend to seek charges against him.

The accident occurred on a recent Tuesday on Highway 101. The injured driver, a 27-year-old man, was driving a smaller passenger car on the southern side of the roadway. For reasons that remain unknown, the man’s vehicle veered across the center line and entered the lane of oncoming traffic.

His car collided with a tractor-trailer heading north. The operator of the rig was unharmed in the collision, but the driver of the car required air transportation to a Seattle medical center. The hospital reported that the driver was in the critical-care unit.

Washington officials have stated that they are going to recommend that DUI charges be filed against this injured driver, along with the a count of driving without a valid license. Provided this man survives his serious injuries, he will most likely benefit by understanding the specific nature of the charges he may be facing and the potential consequences a conviction might bring. He will also want to ensure that his legal right to presumption of innocence is fully respected. He is entitled to challenge evidence that he believes is invalid on legal or factual grounds and to otherwise confront the accusations in a criminal courtroom.
